A New Gun

dwhite..........if your headed in that direction, try the Mini-14. That is topflight, and so many things can be done with that one.

And for feral hogs or nutria, I like my Colt .44 mag with the Holo sight. That thing don't miss. Throw it up, red dot on the target, both eyes open and he's all yours.

But the 10-22 for what it's for just can't be beat.

Depends on what you're shooting. The 7.62X39 round is great for game up to deer. The ammos cheap and readily available. If you're leaning more towards coyotes, the 5.56mm Mini-14 is a better bet. Both of these rifles are great for fast shooting at medium range but aren't known for tack driving accuracy. If you want something to reach out and touch varmints, consider a varmint type AR15 rifle. It'll set you back a few bucks but will easily engage coyotes to 400 yards and beyond. Still gives you 20 rounds of rock and roll in close.

Does anyone own a MARLIN 60 22 long semi auto? Been looking at that for a while. Want it for the little stuff, and maybe to dispatch traped animals.

I think most any .22 will do well. The main thing is to shoot it enough to know what it does and how the bullet travels. You really do have to learn your rifle. When I was in the Army the M1 I was assigned was just about gone. But learning how it shot help me to shoot expert with a piece of junk. Same with most guns. Keep it clean and learn how it shoots. Heck, it may well save you life someday.

Let me put in another plug for the .17 HRM. Very deadly at close range--much more so than the .22 lr. Plus, the bullet is quite frangilble (meaning it will break up) and less apt to richochet if ya miss. It is somewhat noiser than the .22, but far, far less noisy than the .223 or similar centerfire calibers. No recoil to speak of. Just perfect for fox, raccoon and the like.
