Hi all, my name is Corin, I'm from the Vancouver, BC area. So glad I found this site! This last year I have undergone a food revolution that has lead me to gardening my own food and now getting my own chickens. My neighbors have chickens and I buy their eggs, dawned on me I could also have chickens lol. My husband built me a A frame coop ( and promptly banned me from going on Pinterest to find him new "projects") and off I went to our local breeder. Very fortunate to have quite afew local breeders who have huge selections :) I got 4 girls, a RIR, a Orphington Buff, a Welsummer and a Sussex. We also got 1 more the next day but I'm not sure what she is. About 2 weeks ago we lost one to my inexperience, I gave them lawn clippings and 1 of my girls ended up with a compacted crop. I watched many youtube videos to see how to massage her and she ended up choking on her vomit :( terrible day so we are back to 4 pullets. I'm in live with them and when I let them out to free range I can happily sit in a chair for hours watching their antics. My kids adore them. We should have done this YEARS ago!

Welcome to BYC!

So sorry about the hen and the impacted crop. Yes, grass is not really good for chickens. At least not long grass or a lot of it. But it sounds like you have a wonderful flock! So glad you are enjoying them.

Make yourself at home here on BYC and welcome to our flock!

Really seems like kids and chickens belong together. I've seen that many times a child will scoop up a chick / chicken and it seems to really enjoy the attention but, does not care for adults doing the same.

Maybe they realize kids are human "chicks."
