Yessir, thats a nice duck alright.
I'm glad that she got lucky and had someone willing to take her. If she is like my little Mallard hen, she'll be eternally grateful and be your best friend.
Hopefully she will benefit from the swim time. Ducks that do not have access to swim water get depressed and mean. Land is NOT their element..they could sit in the pond all day, even sleep there. People assume that because they have feet they are made to walk. Totally UNtrue. Ducks are made for water and to spend the majority of their time in water, thats why their organs are all inside one "vent" so to keep the body streamline for better hydrodamics...like a boat hull. The feet/legs propel the bird but they are designed to lay straight back behind the bird when it dives so there is less drag..... more efficient that way. This also helps in flight to reduce drag as they fly.
They paddle when under water like a human swims by kicking his feet...legs hanging straight back. You'll get to see some of this hopefully...if she can still swim and dive. Its my hope that her leg will heal with some rest and regular exercise in the water. The first time I saw one of my big ducks go under and swim like a fish, I was completely amazed. My Rouen hen will go under for up to 10 seconds at a time...darting around in the pond like a fish. The first time she did that I almost jumped in to find her. I blinked and she had vanished...so I worried that a turtle got her....at least 10 seconds later she pops up and shakes off...and goes back down. She went diving like that forthe next 1/2 hour. I have no idea what was so facinating under water but something sure had her excited and wanting to be beneath the surface. I'm not talking partially submerged..Completely out of sight,, at least 2 or 3 feet under.
Do close the shower curtain if you leave her alone....she will splash, dive and jump and have the time of her life..they enjoy being in water more than anything in this world. My little ones jump out of my arms the instant they see the water in the bathtub...
have fun !
