A newbie diary—CRISIS MODE!

I used playsand for the litter inside the brooder. It was inexpensive and worked really well.

I also used a stick taped to my bathroom mirror with packing tape to raise and lower the heatlamp to make sure the chicks were at the right temp each week as it changes.

I had two batches of 3 chicks and 4 chicks so I started with the smaller tubb and increased to the larger one later on. I used some chicken wire to keep the cats from sampling the chicks.

So cute how you have written this. I have subscribed to see how you do. What kind of chicks are you getting and how many?!

<Oldenburg Mom starts running around in circles waving her hands in the air, shouting Oh No. The Box—soon to be The Brooder isn't finished.>

HELP ME Obi-wan Kanobi. You're my only hope.

P.S. On a more sober note, the DMV was hell on wheels. I have to go back ... AGAIN. *sigh*

LOL - love the diary! Welcome to the new adventure of chicken rearing! Everyday will bring something new. Your brooder looks good

I use a rubbermaid container similar to yours, maybe a size larger and it is solid in color. I use a window screen for the lid so that ventilation is never an issue. Just a note, as I've seen a couple pic's of feeders like yours and I'm not sure if newbies are aware...You can screw a mason (canning) jar on top of that for larger food storage.

Enjoy your babies!

hello from southern VA!! I to used a tote like that at the start but they quickly outgrew it and we (meaning my DH and dad) built a large wooden brooder! I LOVE it! We used it unil our first 10 chicks were 9 weeks old, and now I have a buff orp momma and 5 orp chicks inside in it!!

Good luck with the chicks, let us all know what breed(s) you are getting!!!!
