Hi,

my Black Australorp, Peppa, just layed the first egg and of course, I was really excited.

It's been four days now and no eggs. I thought that once one chicken lays an egg, than the others start to as well. I also thought that now that she started laying, that she would keep laying. I knew she wouldn't immediately start laying every single day, but four days and still no egg? Is this normal or should I be concerned? I heard that heat could affect egg laying and it has been pretty hot, but there has been a thunder storm every day too which cooled it down. Could it be stress from the thunder and lightning? Any comments on what it could be?

Thanks!

There are a few factors that could be the cause here. If she is very young her reproductive cycle is likely to be irregular. She could have layed somewhere you do not expect and making you have to hunt for them as early on they do not tend to be in the habit of nesting when they need to lay. Heat stress is not great for chickens but if she continues to go on without laying you could bring her inside for a day or two and pamper her with a spa treatment and that would let you observe her for any other problems and make sure she isn't hiding her eggs from you. Best wishes.
