A Question of Cleanliness

Personally, I pick up and rake every other day for the coop and run area, which keeps my hens and eggs cleaner. I completely change the water at minimum once a day, more often in the heat and thoroughly clean the food and waterers once a week.

Artsy Mama, I'm with you. I wash out my dringking bowls etc with a hard hose once a week. Other than that, they are living the life of Riley out there and they don't want it clean. Years now. No problem. Deep litter, pretty much. Fly strips when necessary. Windows open in all kinds of weather. Lots of compost to eat. Happy birds.

My coop I use the deep litter method, add more wood chips when it starts to look a little messy. For my run, they aren't in it much, I usually let them free range my yard all day, so I clean it out when it looks bad. In the wet, rainy, snowy, times I rake it out about every 2-4 weeks and put it on compost pile. I put down hay or straw to keep them out of a mud pit, so I add more until it is just too much and then that is when I rake it out..so is that a deep litter method for the run.

Water bowls I rinse everytime I water, I wash them when they get poopy. I haven't used their food bowl all summer. They just get in there and scratch it all over the ground anyway, so this way I waste less, because they aren't trying to scratch more new out and they eat what is on the ground.

Any buggy tomatoes get tossed to them too, much to their delight!

Ok, how bad am I? They think I am great!
