A question on crows.

A crow or hawk, something is killing our chickens. I have saw big black birds in the trees watching the chickens below. I even had a dream of a BIG hawk swooping towards me. If they're a why to stop the birds from coming?

I 've never heard of crows being carnivores, but my family has had trouble in the past with hawks, red shoulder to be exact. I dont know what your local laws are but I keep a 410 shotgun loaded and handy for just such an occasion.

Crows will kill smaller birds, but usually if they are around my place it is for gaurd duty. Crows will push a preditory bird out of where they are.
That doesn't mean that the crows are always on duty, they are usually up here harrasing me! (jk- long flight)
As annoying as they are, I welcome them.
The only way you are going to keep your chickens safe is in a wire covered pen. That is what the new word on the street is, the hawks have figured out they can zip the netting and go in.
Also, could it be a fox and the crows are announcing it?

I am checking with my state fish and game comission to see if there are exceptions to the law. I was unaware of this federal law, however I will protect my flock at all costs. Please understand I am not attempting to start an argument in this forum, and I appreciate you bringing this to my attention.

My father tried to shoot it, whatever it is. The bullet hit it, but at a odd angle so I don't think it's dead.

It is *possible* to obtain a depredation permit in order to legally remove a bird that is killing your livestock. In order to get the permit, you have to go through your local Fish and Wildlife office. Amongst other things, the application process requires that you have already tried NON-lethal methods of control before you are permitted to use lethal means.

I agree with the other posts.

I have had crows in the yard eating the scratch with my birds.
