(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I am new to thinking of chickens as anything other than evil, horrible creatures. Back story: I was attacked as a toddler by a chicken at a petting zoo - I still have vivid memory of it. I mean, in retrospect, it really wasn't that bad. But at 4 years old, it was traumatic. So, I have been terrified of chickens up until recently (at 19 i was also chased by a chicken because I was too afraid of it to grab it. It had escaped from a friend's coop and we were trying to get them all. I failed). Until now.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
Best friend has 3 RIRs, has been trying to introduce me to them. And then my husband decided we absolutely needed chickens. We went to TSC just to look - I swear, it was just to look at the store. We somehow left with 6 chicks. And thus I had to learn chickens. They are getting moved into their coop within the next week. And then I must have been bitten by a radioactive chicken because now I have decided I want a seperate flock of my own for just my breeds that tickle my fancy (not focusing on meat/egg usefulness) just to raise my flock of happiness.

(3) What breeds do you have?
3 RIRs, 3 Black Australorps. Currently seeking seramas, possibly a silkie or 2, and strongly lusting for Ayam Cemani and Svart Honas. There's a couple others I'm interested in. And there's others he likes for laying.

(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?
During my frantic googling of "help I have 6 chickens and what do I do" - and quickly it became a staple in my daily internet perusal.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Rock Climbing (Indoor). Learning how to ride a bike again. Video Games. Camping. Taking up gardening and carpentry now apparently.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I currently have 1 husband, 1 savannah cat, 1 temporary standard domestic house cat (friend is stationed overseas for a year, so we are watching his cat for him), and 2 sarplaninac puppies who will be trained as LGDs. We have 4 acres and no restrictions on number of chickens/roos, and live in a farming area - our neighbor has already assured us she, and most of the neighborhood, is not bothered by chickens or roosters, and will happily help us use all our eggs. I'm a recent urban/city transplant to the country and have quickly discovered this is what I was meant for/looking for.

:welcome

Congrats on the new chicks and your new place...it's great when you find the place you were meant to be.

Thanks for joining us!

Welcome to Backyard chickens. Just have to ask what is a "sarplaninac puppy?"
It's a breed of livestock guardian dog. Also known as a Yugoslavian Shepard dog. Not well known in the US, which is a shame. They are gorgeous, and very well tempered. They are named after the region that are native to.

First up - Savannah cat named Lexie. Got her "pre-owned/used cat". She was returned for being difficult, and so I adopted her. She's still difficult, I just love and accept that about her.

And as far as my chickens go - today I actually picked up my first pair of Seramas. Once I got over my fear of chickens, I started researching the breeds I wanted for me, for my own enjoyment, not eggs. I quickly fell in love with Seramas. I was fortunate to discover a breeder who lived 30 mins from me who let me come over today and purchase a pair. The photos do not do the girl justice. She's a gorgeous soft peach cream colored. Hubby is quickly putting together housing, and has just resigned himself to the fact that we will be converting the stable to a chicken house for my personal projects.
