(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I am new to thinking of chickens as anything other than evil, horrible creatures. Back story: I was attacked as a toddler by a chicken at a petting zoo - I still have vivid memory of it. I mean, in retrospect, it really wasn't that bad. But at 4 years old, it was traumatic. So, I have been terrified of chickens up until recently (at 19 i was also chased by a chicken because I was too afraid of it to grab it. It had escaped from a friend's coop and we were trying to get them all. I failed). Until now.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
Best friend has 3 RIRs, has been trying to introduce me to them. And then my husband decided we absolutely needed chickens. We went to TSC just to look - I swear, it was just to look at the store. We somehow left with 6 chicks. And thus I had to learn chickens. They are getting moved into their coop within the next week. And then I must have been bitten by a radioactive chicken because now I have decided I want a seperate flock of my own for just my breeds that tickle my fancy (not focusing on meat/egg usefulness) just to raise my flock of happiness.
(3) What breeds do you have?
3 RIRs, 3 Black Australorps. Currently seeking seramas, possibly a silkie or 2, and strongly lusting for Ayam Cemani and Svart Honas. There's a couple others I'm interested in. And there's others he likes for laying.
(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?
During my frantic googling of "help I have 6 chickens and what do I do" - and quickly it became a staple in my daily internet perusal.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Rock Climbing (Indoor). Learning how to ride a bike again. Video Games. Camping. Taking up gardening and carpentry now apparently.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I currently have 1 husband, 1 savannah cat, 1 temporary standard domestic house cat (friend is stationed overseas for a year, so we are watching his cat for him), and 2 sarplaninac puppies who will be trained as LGDs. We have 4 acres and no restrictions on number of chickens/roos, and live in a farming area - our neighbor has already assured us she, and most of the neighborhood, is not bothered by chickens or roosters, and will happily help us use all our eggs. I'm a recent urban/city transplant to the country and have quickly discovered this is what I was meant for/looking for.
