Hi, just wanted to say hello. I was googling around for information about breeding meat birds at home, and found this site. I feel like I struck gold!
We live on 5 acres in Colorado. I had a small laying flock, but dogs (bulldogs) ripped through the fencing and got them all late last summer. I've since reinforced with cattle fencing, and a really nice lady on freecycle gave us some little Belgian D'uccle birds (two Mille Fleur roosters, two Porcelain hens). My todder (who adored the layers) is so happy to have birds again! She has them following her everywhere (toddlers drop a lot of food, hee hee).
I'm starting over this spring (well, except for having the bantams). I'm planning to get some Cornish roosters and probably Partridge Rock hens, along with some meat birds for this year. I figure we'll be able to get all the eggs we want/need, and then incubate eggs for meat birds once the new hens are laying (I'll have to separate the Belgians from my big birds, I know).
Anyway, hello. I have some knowledge, but I look forward to learning from everyone here as well!
