Do you mean like "in real life" friends??? Or just friends on other sites?? I have friends on the sister site....sufficient self! Does that count??

Point me to the rule that forbids off-topic discussion in an off-topic sub-forum.

Rule 12 specifically asks that religious and political topics be in random ramblings.

This is where we are. Unless someone flips out and attacks others on a particular point of view, there is no reason whatsoever to forbid rational adults from having a calm conversation about the word 'socialism.'

Rule # 12 says:

We strongly discourage religious and political topics and reserve the right to delete them at our discretion. The topics of religion and politics should be confined to the “Random Ramblings” section of the forum.

Emphasis above is mine. It only states that if you feel you must start a political thread, that it be placed in Random Ramblings, not that we want you to start them. I personally prefer they not even be here.

Members here are guests of the site owner. Behave yourselves in his livingroom, please, folks. This is your first friendly warning.

I understand what you are saying but the problem is it will always turn bad. Not saying it wouldn't be a good topic, just saying I like my friends to much on here to get in a disagreement about politics again.

Socialism: a theory or system of social organization that advocates the vesting of the ownership and control of the means of production and distribution, of capital, land, etc., in the community as a whole. (from Dictionary.com)

As an example Alaska and it's oil.

I rather enjoy NOT getting political on here, because no matter how well intentioned it starts someone always gets mad. Its just that we all have different opinions, and I for one am fine with that.

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but this particular thread is exactly the place for people to get political.

Why in the world would any site have an off topic sub-forum if they are just going to delete all the threads that are off topic?

This particular place is the Realm of Nifty and Terri.

Read the rules.

If you want to talk chickens, do so.

If you want to talk politics, go somewhere else. It's that easy.

No, this is the specified place on this website for off-topic conversations.

If this site wishes to restrict it's members to chicken only topics, then there should not be an off-topic thread.

And according to the rules, until someone acts unruly, nothing gets deleted.

Timmo I see you've been around since April, but not actively posting much. What everyone is trying to avoid is a topic that will almost always get out of hand right away because of strong feelings on the subject. Not everyone can carry on a calm discussion and it turns to flaming and arguing, therefore it is easier to try and stay away from such topics.
You are more than welcome to open your discussion and I hope that people will answer you in a calm and polite manner without being rude or attacking others beliefs.
Socialism has been around a long time, it's meaning has become muddied by inappropriate use, by being taken out of context, and by being given a connotation that is not true to what the meaning was intended to be. I won't give my views on it, or my opinion in how it is being bandied about right now and recently. I do hope you have a good discussion though and get the answers you are looking for.

Thanks for addressing the topic.

I have limited knowledge of Alaska. Is it true that they don't collect state income taxes? Does their oil pay for everything or do they get federal money for roads and such?

Is it true that every citizen receives a cash payment from the profits of their oil? Nothing wrong with that, but isn't that socialism?

Strong feelings on the subject is the entire point.

Adults can, and SHOULD, talk about these things.

This site provides something unique....chickens. I don't know what it is, but these darn birds bring people together like nothing else. Look at the explosion of members on this site. People from all over the world are registered here. If there was ever a perfect forum to discuss politics, this is it.

And this is the sub-forum devoted to just that.

If members wish to avoid living in the real world, I suggest Nifty make one more addition...a pseudo off-topic sub-forum.

edited to add...

Thanks for that.
