Hi All, A newbie here. My amazing 5 week old chickens- Blossom, Pedro, Frango, & Destructo ( I did not name them...lol) are ready for treats other than Mealy worms. Do I need to buy them chicken grit if their coop is already on top of a dirt? I have some sand that I used for gardening. Would that work if I just spread it on the ground?

I didn't give my free range chickens grit because they were out an about and I figured they got their own. I now use sand as bedding in my chicken coop so I don't worry about it at all; I think putting a container of sand in the coop would suffice. (As long as it is not really fine sand.)

I don't use grit until winter when the ground is frozen. Then it's just from a bucket that I collected a little coarse sand/pebbles from the driveway in late fall. I through a handful down every few weeks or more. In spring summer and fall they easily fend for themselves as they have access to the ground.
