A Rooster showed up on my porch

I would reccomend free-ranging and getting him some girls. I free-range my chickens and at night they go back into thier coop without any problems. However, if you decide not to free-range you should build a run and a coop with at least 3-5 girls. As for food you should get some scratch and for the ladies some laying pellets. All that your doing right now is amazing. Keep it up and best of luck to you and Mr. Brown!

And I don't own any roosters/chickens!! We are not sure where he came from but he looks to be in rough shape with missing feathers on his back and chest. He drinks water and I tried giving him some bird feed (all we had on hand) - and he seems to be eating and drinking okay. Has been here a few days - does not crow in the mornings, or at any point during the day - will just kind of make small noises. Comes right up to the windows and will peck on the door for attention. Doesn't seem to mind us walking by him, though it's not like we'd attempt to "pet" him. We have no idea what kind of rooster he is, where he came from, how old he is, or how to care for him. We have named him Mr. Brown, (James to his friends) because of his awesome strut, and coloring, but would appreciate any advice or wisdom you might be able to share! :) Thank you!
Welcome to BYC!
We call them "Abraham Lincoln's". In the decade since we moved to the sticks, several people have thrown unwanted Roosters over our fence line. We catch em at night when the sun goes down and sell them on craigslist.org for 5 Bucks- thus the whole Abe Lincoln thingy. We have too many boys!
If you don't want him, he will go dormant in dark, then swoop em up and sell him for the price of a young and tender bird from the grocery store.

Or just hang on to Mr. James Brown as a pet and he will give you a reason to hang out with us BYCers!
Then you can sincerely say- "OW! I FEEL GOOD!"
BUT BEWARE OF CHICKEN MATH!

Glad you joined our flock! Pull up a roost! :hugs
Your situation touches me because this is exactly how I came across my first roo and my adult start into having chickens (had them as a child but didn't start again until 30+ years later). Best of luck with your new found friend!
Thank you so much!! Great to know I wasn't the only one blessed by a Good Luck Rooster!! :) (at least that's what people have told me!! *winks*)

I have to say - you guys certainly are a friendly bunch and we are seriously considering trying to make him a home here if he chooses to stay :) We do have family who have chickens/roosters (though they are out of town and won't return for another week) and if they "need" him - then it would be the wise thing to let them take him, if not, we might just be okay with having him share our yard!! :)

I wouldn't rush to accommodate his every need. First, he may decide to go elsewhere. Second you don't know if Roosters are legal where you live/ or if you can add more birds.

Best to find out first if you are allowed chickens/rooster. If so and you want to take on the responsibility of having a rooster and adding hens to make a flock. He won't pine away and die in a week or two, he chose your property. If he isn't aggressive to you or your family and you decide to keep him., then you may want to set up some type of coop and fenced area for James and his brides to be.

If you have a local "Craig's List," often coops and chickens are offered- sometimes free because the people decided chickens were NOT for them. Also chain link dog panels are generally available at good prices.
