A Rooster showed up on my porch

I wouldn't rush to accommodate his every need. First, he may decide to go elsewhere. Second you don't know if Roosters are legal where you live/ or if you can add more birds.

Best to find out first if you are allowed chickens/rooster. If so and you want to take on the responsibility of having a rooster and adding hens to make a flock. He won't pine away and die in a week or two, he chose your property. If he isn't aggressive to you or your family and you decide to keep him., then you may want to set up some type of coop and fenced area for James and his brides to be.

If you have a local "Craig's List," often coops and chickens are offered- sometimes free because the people decided chickens were NOT for them. Also chain link dog panels are generally available at good prices.

Hey there drumstick diva! - Great advice, Thank you - just trying to read and learn at this stage - I appreciate the caution though, I should note I'm in a tiny town in South Texas where the neighbors across the street from our post office have chickens loose in their yard (unfortunately they're not missing a rooster - we've asked!). As I mentioned earlier I live next door to a country vet and no one has reported a missing rooster, but we did leave our information. We have almost a full acre here and so far he hasn't seemed to want for very much other than some water, some snacks and his favorite spot on the back of the bench on our porch! :) Also we're waiting on some family to get back from vacation - they currently keep chickens/roosters and may end up keeping him or helping us get started depending on their current situation. Thanks again for the feedback.

I also had a rooster show up about a year ago. I tried catching him and I would have kept him if I caught him. I ended up buying him food, treats, a waterer and a food bowl--after 2 days of saying I wouldnt. Poor thing was hungry and I have to say I was excited to come home and have him greet me. He ended up across the street with one girlfriend. He hopped their fence, went in the coop at night and that was that. He was intriguing and the reason I ended up getting chickens 6 months later. I named him Ronnie(free bird). I visit him often.

Welcome to BYC! Just in case you need help with the food as a newbie chicken owner. You would need to give him All Flock pellets with free access Granite. NEVER give Roosters calcium/oyster shells. 18% protein is best but 16% will do fine. Try not to give him mealworms more than 10% of his diet. Good Luck! :thumbsup

With both the feed store and a country vet next door to us, we've definitely thought about it but neither of us had very much experience other than having family that kept chickens! It's interesting how comfortable he seems without any set up for a rooster! I am pretty sure we have the space but this is all so new - usually... I'm a ferret rescue mom - this is a whole new critter - but he's quite charming so far :)

Is there a particular brand or brands that you recommend? - I read that the protein is especially helpful during molting?... I think :)

Congrats on your new friend. Never know, could be an angel or Jesus. Invite him in. Well not in your house lol . He came there for a reason. He seems to be a pet. Never know, he may have decided to move because he could not take the hen pecking any longer at the old place Lol I would just keep him.
If you have a dog crate he is good. Some chicken scratch and your table scraps and he will eat bugs and lizzards and stuff! Let him forage. Have fun! P.S he will create a “cooling hole” to sit in. Watch where your going. They build bunkers that are ankle twisters.
