Why didn't you just throw the bread treat outside in the run? That's probably why they were trying to get back in.

I've tried luring them outside with bread every day, but they just don't like snow or cold. They'll gather on the threshold of the door, but no further.
I'm sure with all the chaos they forgot about the bread - as did I. I could have tossed the bread out afterwards to keep them entertained, but didn't think about it.

You were lucky this time. Now that you know it can happen, fix the problem so it won't happen again especially if you are not there to fix it. Chickens have little heads, therefore they have tiny brains. Need I say any more?

I didn't explain this well, I move the lamp when I put the feed in the feeder, otherwise I bump my head on it. When i leave the house I put the lamp back where it belongs. So, this wouldn't be a normal risk for them.
As far as having tiny brains, I bumped my head on the heat lamp a good dozen times before it came to me to move it out of the way while I put the feed in the feeder.

Whoa! I highly recommend the ceramic heat bulbs. They won't shatter into a million pieces when you drop them. And yes, I can say that from experience. . . they actually crack once or twice, and stay connected to the lamp. Much, much safer than glass.

Sorry about your hen drama! We have those things happen all the time ~ without the flames, though.

So far.
