A runt or is there more to it?

It would help the remove the nastiness, but not cure the cause of it.
Diagnosing the cause, accurately, so you can effectively treat it is the difficult part.
Posting pics and info in the disease forum would be the way to go if you want to try and diagnose/cure it.
Personally, I believe this bird has something wrong inside that can't be fixed and would euthanize it. Especially because you had another one that was 'not right' that died, as @123RedBeard has pointed out.
I totally missed that there was another. Poor birdies. Didn't even get a fair chance at life. I would definitely notify the hatchery.

So, I gave it a good cleaning...she took it really well too.
Thoughts?

Looks much better, and I bet it feels and smells much better, too!

Do you folx think it's possible that rhis chick can manage of it is deformed? It will definitely have special needs and require extra care....

No this is the second one...it wasn't as small as the other...when it died, it became the flock runt.

That's so disappointing ... I'm guessing this one will not make it either ... even if it does continue on living, it will always be a "problem bird" needing special care, and probably not ever lay an egg ...

I know you originally got 25 RIR to hopefully have a nice little egg business/hobby ... getting rid of this unproductive one will leave you with 21 IIRC ... which in my opinion is still more than double what your coop will hold when they are mature ...

In another week or two you should have a much better idea if you got any cockrells ... In the spring I'd suggest you plan on picking 8-10 pullets to keep, and sell the extra point-of-lay (POL) RIR pullets, if you advertise on Craigslist or something, you should be able to sell them for $20-$30 each.

Thanks for all the advice, support and help 123RedBeard. As a rookie I have been learning as I go and it has been great that there are people like you and so many others who have taken time out of their day to read my insanity and then help provide a path for success.
I'm not sure if I am going to reduce my flock though. Since I am going to free range them full time, many have told me I can keep what I have since they will only use the coop to roost at night. I will have enough roosting space for 24 birds and it looks like I will have no more than 21 left.
I can't tell you how much I have enjoyed this. I look forward to visiting my girls 4 or 5 times a day. There are a couple that run up to the door and want to roost on my arm.
I am sure I am geeking out and all this excitement will wear off. But, in the meantime, I am having a great time.
There is one question I have that no one has really answered for me, can you have roosts above the nesting boxes. I know they have to be higher or they will use the boxes to sleep in and that is not a good thing.
Thanks again...Buckeye
