None of my Silkie's wanted to go out today... one of my girls went missing yesterday and I searched for over half an hour for her, calling out but she did not come home... it was dark and I used a flashlight as I was determined to find her...

I found her body in the mill pond - she had (I think) frozen to death in the cold water, her head was above the water and despite my spending an age upon trying to revive her she was beyond help.

Sadly she would have been playing with her Brothers and Sister's and no doubt they would have witnessed her plight, not one of the males came out of the coop today and I had to take them from their roost to encourage them to eat - I cried a bucket of tears but I am more saddened fro her family as they are feeling her loss badly.

It is so awful as if any chickens do ever fall in the mill pond they always manage to swim out again - she may have been caught in some of the debris that comes down from the river - rotting leaves and other vegetation.

A sad day for all concerned here

It sounds like the others are mourning her today too :(

So very sorry. I keep most of my Silkies penned as they just don't do well getting out of sticky situations...their limited sight or timid nature don't help.

Maybe the water was too cold and numbed her senses. Poor baby.

Sorry for your loss!

Thank you everyone for your responses.... I am still having to remove "The Colonel" from the roost to eat and drink - he seems to be suffering more than the other male Silkies.... he still will not venture outside the coop yet - the female Silkies are not bothered... as far as they seem concerned.... there is more food to eat!

C'est la vie!
