I'm new here. This is my first post. I'm emotional right now so please be gentle. I had to put a duck down today. She was born with a leg deformity. I gave her a special living place and carefully cared for her. I tried the niacin and vitamin B when she was young but it didn't help. She always dragged her leg behind her. It became infected. I soaked it epsom salt regularly and kept it bandaged. It became gang green. It rotted to the bone. She was in so much pain. I had to put her down today. I shot her. I'm so disturbed by it all. Has anyone went through this? How did you get past it? I've never killed an animal before. I feel awful.

It’s never an easy thing to do, but you can rest assured that you did the kindest thing for her. You gave her the best life she could have, for however long she was able, and then gave her a swift end rather than letting her suffer. That just shows your compassion more than anything. :hugs It doesn’t get easier but it’s absolutely the right thing to do, to alleviate suffering for our feathered and furred friends in our care.

Awww thank you for your sweet response. It definitely was not easy. I love all little beeings. I'm a healer not a killer. This was my first time so my heart is very heavy. You have made me feel better, thank you!

I'm sorry for your loss. 😥

:welcome Sorry for your loss. :( Being an animal lover and having to do what is humanely best is never easy. Sounds like you done everything you could to help the poor little thing and that is very admirable on your part. :love Try not to be so hard on yourself, you done the right thing.

A few years back I had to put down my rescue German Shepherd. Fritz was ten years old at the time and had contracted that debilitating hip disease that a lot of GS can get. There is no cure for it and it is a very awful disease to have to see your best friend start to suffer from it.

That was a very sad day for me also, I just keep remembering all the great times we had together and with time it does get easier. Fritz is in a better place now, but not out of my heart. :love

:hugsI’m sorry you had to experience this. Death of any form is never easy. (I can still remember the squirrel I accidentally hit with my car 25+years ago) So yes many people here have had to deal with the loss of an animal. As for how do you get over it: keep reminding yourself that you did the best you could and treated it with the respect it deserved. :hugs
