A sad subject.....

At least she's out of pain now. I would certainly rather have my dome lopped off than face Carbon Dioxide.

So very sorry about Priscilla, it seems that it all went peacefully for your description, which is the best we can hope for. You are right, the ones that endear the most to us are the ones that die first.
I never heard about giving them alcohol before, did you give it to her orally with a syringe?
At the vet's they first give them an injection to put them to sleep and then they apply the lethal one which could be the equivalent of the alcohol and then the gas.
25cc of alcohol seem to me too much for a chicken, I wonder if we could give them much less. How did you come up to that dose?

I tubed her alcohol so she neve even knew what she was getting. 25ml is a lot, but I wanted to make sure she was almost unconscious for the gas, I did not want her to "sober up" to say the least. I'm sure the alcohol would of done her in, but I didn't want to wait around for it. The closest avian vet for me is 45 min away and the vet that's close to me that I normally take her too isn't an avian vet, but knows enough about birds, but the thought of taking her there with all that fear running through her mind I just couldn't do. It took about an hour before she got the way I wanted her, but she was starting to become "drunk" around 30 minutes. She just laid in my arms without a care in the work, with no fear. I got the alcohol idea from seminolewind, I had previous read a post about her doing that to her beloved chicken. I researched the heck out of alcohol, but couldn't really find too much about it. It served it's purpose for me....it sedated her and it really allowed her to not know what was going on.

Oh, Jen, I am so so so sorry!

I know it's always the sweetest ones.

Aldarita, I would rather give them too much alcohol than not enough. It's not something I really want to practice with. I got the idea because how many times have people talked about chickens getting drunk from fermented fruit. I did try 10 valium once, and it did absolutely nothing. There's nothing written on the alcohol, but it does get them virtually unconscious. I can deal with that and the axe after that.

Thanks seminolewind. She was pretty out of it by the hour mark....she didn't even move when we moved her. Thank you.

Thanks seminolewind, I will certainly try anything to make their passing as swift and peaceful as possible. I have euthanized 2 of my girls with CO2 and now I know that giving them vodka will ease the process if it renders them unconscious.

JensChickies, was Priscilla a blue Andalucian? She just looks a lot like my Rosario. She is recovering from an impacted crop (first time with me) that almost kill her.

No she was actually a splash Langshan. I originally got her from a breeder. Miss Priss had the wrong color eyes for a langshan so I took her. Langshans are suppose to have that dark brown color, but hers came out like a gold color. Langshans are seriously the sweetest birds. Impacted crops are no fun....that's how I had to learn how to tube feed. I actually ended up tube feeding my black langshan for about a month to get her back on her feet. :)

I'm so glad a stumbles across seminolewind's post about vodka. I truly feel that Priscilla had no fear, especially for that hour after. I'm sure the vodka eased the pain she was in, plus we were in a dark room with her so she would relax. I don't even think she knew we had put her in a box. Bless her sweet little heart.

JensChickies, I am very interesting in learning how to tube feed, there are some threads I have read but I rather learn from someone that has actually practised with it. I know there will be times when I will need to do it. Since your thread is about euthanasia, I don't want to change the topic so if it is OK I will PM you.
