A snake bit me yesterday!

I used to breed finches in an indoor aviary in my living room...came inside one day to a big fat black snake inside the aviary...He'd eaten only the most expensive birds of course.

Use the hoe to pull the snake out of the nest box(if necessary) and then hack his evil you-know-what to pieces...I'm just sayin'...
Noone SHOULD be offended that you aren't part of the "Snake Relocation Protection Program"-I sure ain't a member of the Program.

I will leave a King Snake alone, so long as it isn't within 100 miles from my coop... Yep... 100 miles...

I get snakes bites fairly regularly from "non-poisonous" species. Many species originally thought not to be poisonous are infact poisonous, just not to us. I get bitten by snakes hung up in bird netting and seines around ponds. Northern water snakes my biggest problem but rat snakes, speckled king snakes, "blue racers", garter snakes, ribbon snakes and bull snakes are also biters from time to time. Bites slow to heal and sometimes get infected so wash area thoroughly with warm water and soap.

Tetanus can actually only exist in environments that have no or nearly no oxygen. It cannot survive in an oxygen rich environment. If you have a cut that is bleeding well you are safe from tetanus by the virtue of your blood being quite full of oxygen.
Tetanus shots are generally for deep puncture wounds with little bleeding where there is a possibility that blood is not getting to parts of the wound and there isn't enough oxygen to prevent Tetanus.

I prefer shovels myself for sakes (not that we have many dangerous ones around here) you can either chop or whack...Dual purpose!

mamabahre,

I think you are correct but for some reason our MD always updates our tetanus vacinations when we report animal bites of any kind. Shots usually end up hurting more than bite.

Absolutely, most ER docs too will pressure heavy for a Tetanus shot for a huge range of wounds. It always cracks me up when you HAVE to get a Tetanus shot even when you are bleeding freely...I have my own issues with vaccines in general but I save that for my parenting forums generally, just wanted to throw that information out about the Tetanus shots in general.

I have had my chicks for 3 days now and I think if I had seen all these posts on snakes in and around and under chicken coops and chickens themselves, I might have reconsidered!
This snake thing is totally creeping me out because I know there are black snakes already living in my yard and they don't know about the chickens yet...oh boy!
