A Squirrel Attacked My Chicken!

Hi Folks!

I would have never believed a Squirrel could attack our chickens, but I saw it unfold right in front of my eyes! I was in our bedroom looking out the window, when my Silkie, Callie, started to squeal like mad. To my horror, a Squirrel had her leg in his/her mouth, swinging her left to right. I punched out the screen window and ran outside to chase it away, but I'm sure that will do little to deter it from coming back.

Just a heads-up if any of your chickens get attacked and you scratch your head in bewilderment. I have a feeling this little turd is the same varmint who killed some of our babies that just hatched. I am so angry I can't see straight; but then again, we live on a big property with free-range chickens, so I have to expect this type of behaviour. I never thought I'd be OK with using a BB on a Squirrel, but I'll be damned if I have them using my yard as a breakfast buffet!

She is OK, thank god. And rabies were the first thing I thought of...but we have so many predators where I live (Mountain Lions, Coyotes, Snakes, Birds of Prey, etc.) that we need a BB to shoo them off. In fact, a month ago, a Coyote jumped the fence and wouldn't get out of the yard until I started shooting at it. Same with the Mountain Lion...just sat there obstinate as can be. But Squirrels...what the hell? Lord knows I have a s**t load of them too right now.
 
I have seen pine squirrels go into my quail pen and steel eggs.We now have grey squirrels they are about twice the size of a pine squirrel. I am thinking they will be causing me some trouble. Squirrels are known to take eggs and baby birds in the wild.
they only solution I can see is get rid of them. Once a wild animal learns a bad habit they will keep coming back.

I agree. We have a broody female duck, and she went nuts a few weeks ago when a snake decided to claim her clutch. Thankfully, she gave him mad hell and chased it off. (Another event my hubby and I saw in real time!)

I was proud of her...but not all stories end that way. And now I have to worry about the damn Squirrels. Ugh.
