A step towards knowing where your food comes from.

I have seen some rather bad backyard chicken health, which also led me to shy away from starting with chickens from a private party. Then again I suppose commercial outfits do the same.

It depends on the hatchery. I've been to Meyer's and talked to people that worked for them. They care about the health of their birds and it shows in their care. Not sure about Mt. Healthy since the CDC reports them for salmonella frequently. The same is true with private "breeders" in some cases. There was a guy not to long ago who posted videos of his birds on YouTube. All overcrowded, living in filth, and generally poor representatives of the breed. Not long after that he went out of business. If you can visit the breeder you're getting birds from, that is always best.

Wow, I love the responses and advice! I had read the bigger breeds were typically less flighty. Bedding wise how many of you guys use sand? (Construction variety) I am mulling over starting that way since I live in a wetter climate. I have read some really good things about sand vs pine shavings

I've used both sand and fine pea gravel and both work well. Just be sure if you use sand to use a very coarse sand with lots of small pebbles in it. Coarse river sand is idea, but a very coarse construction sand will work as well.

Welcome to BYC! Please make yourself at home and we are here to help.

Everyone above has given you great advice,

My personal breed favorite is the buff orpington. They are friendly, affectionate and great layers.
