I'd like to introduce myself to this great group of chicken lovers! I live on a family farm about one hour west of Washington, DC, right in the middle of Virginia's Horse Country...which is rapidly becoming chicken country. My kids are tenth generation on these acres. My husband used to be a dairy farmer, but now sells John Deere ag equipment, and we have organic beef cows and several horses on the farm.

After trying another breed, I have decided the Swedish Flower hens are for me. My dad was Swedish and I spent a lot of time over there, so I was intrigued when I read about them. And once I saw them, I was in love. I only have five hens and three roosters at this point but can't wait to get more. One (Silvia, named after the Swedish Queen) is laying; the others are younger but should be coming along soon.

I really enjoy having them, and look forward to being part of Backyard Chickens.com.

Silvia must have been a very popular queen. Even in the plant world one of the most beautiful streptocarpus blossoms belong to a Swedish hybrid named Silvia after the queen.
