A very bad day

I worked late in my yard one evening and got interupted by a phone call. My DW was also reminding me dinner was ready. Somewhere in all of that I absent mindedly left the front door on a coop unlocked. After I had eaten dinner I began to doubt whether the bird's were secured. When I went to make sure the door was locked I found about that many birds dead or dying and some missing that I found. In about 45 minutes to an hours time we lost that many. We did not hear anything.
I sat up that night hoping the perpretator would be back. I sat about 75' away with a loaded shotgun. About 3 Am I was giving up and was going to check the latches before I went in. As I approached two dogs that were on the opposite side of the house trying to work a carcass out of the fence that I left out as bait took off. I was right there and did not see them approach (quite a few trees) or heard them. One got away. Two dogs later, I figured out a routine a group of dogs worked in our area. Right after dusk they would run the peremiter to see if the coast was clear, and then quickly work across the yard. If there was oppurtunity they would take it and if not, move on. These things were not stupid. There was approximately five in this group and all owned by someone nearby. They did make it down to two dogs, but a litter of puppies or so later their numbers are back up.
I had no luck with the owners or animal control. I can dig however and have. They can't get into our houses and I do not think I will ever leave something not shut and latched again. The point is that it does not take long. Also coyotes and dogs are not much different, especially when they are in a hole. I love dogs, but some dog owners leave you with no choice. I like to let my birds out to run in the afternoons, and will not let someone else dictate what I do or not. I have not seen any of those people's dogs near us in a while, hopefully they have learned to fear the place, and now I have a dog.

I'm sure I won't get any sleep tonight I'll be waiting, watching, locked, and loaded. I have went around and secured the pen they were in last night a little better. The only thing in it now is the dead bird I found (bait). Thank goodness I moved my sebrights out of there and into a new pen yesterday. I would have cried if something happened to them. What I lost was this years pullets I was keeping and a few bantams. I've never had anything take this many birds its a real downer. We get the occasional hawk and owl here and they and I let them slide as they don't seem to return daily for meals. I've had dogs get into my birds before and take a hefty toll on them but they always left the bodies lay after they had their fun with them. I let my birds out to free range everyday but I'm gonna keep them on lock down for the next few days just to be safe. I'll have to buy egg layers sometime to make up for the loss of the pullets. The bantams I had were hatchery OEGB Red Pyles so it'll probably be next year before I get anymore of those if at all, unless I get lucky and run into someone with a pair for sale. Still no more bodies to be found so 1/10 accounted for. I was hoping some of them got scared and ran and hid but so far looks like they're gone for good

This is the extent we have to go to to keep night time predators out, fence is also buried several inches into the ground. No losses as long as they are securely closed up each night. We have 2 back to back setups almost the same and one has 10 week old pullets in it right now...

Well, it'll be interesting how this plays out. I am real sorry for your loss...

Spoke with all the neighbors and searched every inch of my property but no luck on recovering anymore carcasses. Buried the one little guy I did find and kept everyone penned for the most part. Some don't have their wings clipped and decided it was free range time regardless of the gate being open or shut. The neighbor swears the same thing happened to his buddy up the road and that it was a panther. I'm fairly certain we don't have panthers but we do have coyote around. Will be sleeping with one eye open tonight. Thanks for all your support guys & gals

Sorry for your loss.I would set up a gamecam.Pictures are very revealing.Good luck catching your predator..

So sorry for your losses.

That really stinks to lose anything but I think the worst part is not knowing what got to them. Good luck with your mystery pred.
