Hello everyone, I'm new to the site and new to raising Quails.
I grew up around chickens when I was a kid, so in my quest of finding ways to be eat more natural and be more self-sufficient, my first thought was to raise chickens. That would have been nice, except that I'm in a "City", with no even half an acre and my neighbors actually like me. So even thought I believe he City will allow chickens, I didn't want to bother the whole neighborhood with the noise and there are other small reason to add to why not chickens. So this is how I got to Quails as an option. This is my first time raising anything. I have read a lot of articles, been to a bunch of website and done some extensive homework. Now, so far my issue is that I have read everywhere to keep a 1:3 male to female ratio. or 1:5. Well, I purchased 20 baby Coturnix Quails, only 18 made it. They are two weeks and 2 days old today and I can already see that I have about 3 males. Which is not bad so far, but I didn't check them all.
I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on what I can do if I have too many males and not enough hans? I don't want them killing each other. I first got them with the idea that I will get eggs and also meet, but I an bring myself up to killing them and eating them. I know that might sound weird since I'm trying to be self-sufficient, but hey, it's my first try and I girl can dream.
Any ideas or suggestions? since everywhere that I have read it states that they die pretty soon (2 years or so) I don't know if I can give the extra males again or not. Not sure if anyone will be interested.
