I have a couple girls that are laying and several more who aren't. I did notice that my laying girls will submit to mating - if they are willing squat down & brace their wings and it's over in a few seconds, while those who are younger want nothing to do with it and will squack and run away. Not that my egg layers will always submit, but they don't make much of a scene. If they're not interested at that moment, they just walk away. Something that I found interesting was my bantam pullet started allowing my bantam cockerel mate w/ her last week and then on Saturday of last week she laid her first egg, so I believe (though not an expert) if they are submitting to mating, that an egg will be along sooner, rather than later.

Oh, and if you're looking to rehome, try putting an ad o craigslist, or in your local paper. I ended up w a buff orpington who turned out to be male and put an ad out for him and a nice man took him for breeding. It might take you a bit, but you may want to give it a try.. I was told 1 boy to 10-12 girls otherwise they can hurt the females by over mating. Right now I have 2 boys to 12 girls, but one is a bantam and I feel like he doesn't really count since he's 1/4 of a chicken. I've also seen where people have rooster only flocks that are totally separated from the girls. I would have considered that but space was an issue, and the fact that the buff wanted to eat my bantam.

I do believe Thelma's first is a wind/fart egg! We put it over a light to see the yolk and there isn't one. Still proud of my girl though. It weighs in at exactly 42g. Can't wait to see one with yolk and all!
