Hi All!
My best buddy & I have recently bought 8 acres partially wooded pasture with a barn in SE MO. where we plan to raise some cattle. We are also in the process of purchasing homes/land/pasture near the 8 acres where we plan to live. We'd love to have a small flock of chickens. I am particularly interested in some Lavenders. He has raised chickens in the past but I have Very little experience! Any good books or resources other than this forum you'd recommend? Thanks in advance.

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?

(3) What breeds do you have?
N/A

(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?
Saw an ad in Lancaster Farming for Lavender Ameraucanas and did an Internet search.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Spinning wool, knitting. Have had a flock of sheep.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I'm a Christian, widowed/single, retired and have a cat. I am trying to learn and follow God's will for my life. I love animals. I have improved my health by losing weight and eating a better diet.

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. You have a very good and thorough introduction.) If you haven't done so already, definitely check out our Learning Center at https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center. There is loads of useful information there. As far as other resources go, you might want to pick up a copy of Mini Encyclopedia of Chicken Breeds and Care by Frances Bassom (http://www.amazon.com/Mini-Encyclopedia-Chicken-Breeds-Care/dp/1554074738). Despite the word "mini" in the title, it's the most comprehensive book I have read on this particular subject. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck in getting your chickens.

MY FIRST CHICKENS EVER! NEW TO BYC TOO!
Hello, I got 1Australop, 2 Buff, 3 Isa brown. All hens!
Was told the isa's were laying eggs but the others weren't yet as they were too young still but should start any time. I'm on 4 acres, retired, enjoy flying, boating, and just keeping busy. Looking to learn lots. Like I hope this is posted in the proper area. Excited to raise chickens. I got their coop & runs set up 2 days ago & brought the girls home yesterday.
Thanks for your help in advance!

so glad you have joined us.

There are a number of texts I found helpful in preparing for and ongoing management of my small flock.

IMO the most helpful were: "Storey's Guide to Raising Chickens" and "Raising Chickens for Dummies".

The Learning Center Articles on BYC and the Coop/Run forums were a great help to get me started. And the forums have provided help beyond what one can find in the books.

Feel free to ask questions, we're here to help.

Wow, you are all so welcoming and generous with info. I've got a coupe of books in mr "Wish List" on Amazon, ready to purchase on payday. Looks like I better start reading on a couple of threads! "Cluck, cluck", ;-)
