Abandonded pets-RANT

We have had a rash of animals lately emus, peacocks, turkeys, chickens, ducks even a swan!

People dump just about anything and expect it to survive in a city no less.

It's because people fear death so much. They will NOT acknowledge that death is better than a life of suffering and it KILLS me. You would be doing these animals a favor by spending $80 more at the most to put the animal down. If the situation was THAT bad that you cannot "afford" to euthanize the animal, have someone shoot it. I know I sound harsh, but being shot and killed, if one cannot euthanize, is much better than being struck by cars or starving to death.

People for some reason think ANY form of life is better than death. This is why unmanageable and unwanted dogs end up on 3 feet of chain in the backyard, as far away from the house as they can, and "throw" the dog food.

It just gets me so ticked off! I would euthanize ALL my dogs, before I abandoned one in the middle of a farmer's field.

It's ridiculous people. I HATE it. The same people who would take a horse down to the auction to SELL it to the killer buyers(slaughter houses) will not spend a couple bucks to shoot their animal, locate a rescue, or a few bucks to have them euthanized. It's sick, I'm sorry. I would shoot my horses before they starved to death. My ducks, geese, quail, and chickens would all be humanely killed, if I couldn't place them in a rescue or new home, before I dumped them in a park or off in the woods.

Whoo.. Glad I got that off my chest. Now, I hope and pray that it never gets to that point. I just wish other people would get over themselves and do what's best for the animal. *sigh*

Seems that people think that dumping animals at a farm is a good thing. We had a toy dog that was dumped by the mailbox. It was only a little puppy. And at that time the coyotes were thick. Lucky we found it first!
But we have had pregnant cats, and large dogs dropped off. I guess people think they will have a good home on a farm. Either way it's a way to dump your responsibility onto someone else!
Can't believe that someone would do that to a horse! And it still had tack (reins) on it too!!

I have a senior and a "cripple" who will be euthanized before ever setting foot at an auction or overrun rescue. And I would love to apply for my dream job.....castration fairy! One slice of my wand and puppy/ kitten/ too many horses to feed problems start to magically ease up!

we live wayyyyyyyyyyyback in the woods and have had lots of cats dumped on us. Since we do have a large barn, I try to feed as many as I can but first they have to be neutered or spayed, and since I live on ssa the spay clinic does it for a donation( they would do it free but Ifeel guilty to ask them to). I am not a cat person, perfer dogs but if someone dumped a horse in my woods Iwould try to keep it for my GGD. she loves horses.I know they are expensive to take care of, with thefeed, hay and all the hoof treaments they have to have but I would rather try to take care of one than to see it starve. I actually get sick to see some of the animals dumped in ourwoods:somad marrie

LOL.. I need a visit from the "castration fairy"!

I've a three year old colt that needs a swipe of that wand!

(He is due to be cut and will be shortly. But, fear not, there will be no babies for him, the only other horse on the property and in the pasture is a gelding, who rules the pasture)

We live on the edge of town and people, even here, dump cats quite often. Our "Eddie" was one of those, we even caught them dumping him off, got the license plate number etc. When I called it in, they did nothing, just blew it off.
The other day my daughter said she saw a very skinny dog running down the sidewalk, she tried to call it but it just looked more scared and ran faster. Poor thing.
Sigh. I dont understand abandoning any animal. While shelters may not be the greatest and likely have to put an animal to sleep, in my opinion, like many others, its better than the alternative when idiots dump their animals.

Many get dumped because the shelters are full. I've been trying to home a previously foundered and unrideable horse for 2 years. I tried rescues, I tried paying all the coggins, shots, and transport to someone's property... With the way things are going recently I can't take care of as many as I could. I've cut my herd in half but even well bred, registered horses I've had to give away. I traded 2 for an akita puppy. Nowhere and noone can take horses right now. I was just helping work with a horse down the road that the neighbors took in because the owners threw it in a stall about as wide as the horse and didn't take it out for 3months. It just stood there for 3 months because noone had any pasture space and noone would take it.

Also my ex tried to leave a guinea pig at a shelter when he moved back home across the country. Despite the fact he said he couldn't rehome it anywhere and couldn't take it with him they refused to take it. He told me he was just going to leave it in the apartment because he didn't know what to do with it. (There's a reason he's my ex). I had 8 females of my own so I couldn't take his male but called the shelter up and told them the situation. They finally took the guinea pig. Better they take it and put it down than he decides to leave it there with no care. What do people do when even the rescues can't help and the vet and everyone around them looks down at them for asking to put down a healthy animal? Some vets will even refuse despite then telling you they can't take the animal either.

Its sad- and breeders keep breeding.I don't mean the ones who do all the health testing and have champion dogs/cats/horses etc who carefully research the parents and have waiting lists etc I mean the ones who breed the animals every cycle with no concern little vet care with profit in mind. All our cats and dogs are from pounds or are rescues. As for the swan being dumped... if I only had a pond. If we had more land I'd be taking in horses, ponies and the like too.

Most vets I know will put down a otherwise healthy animal if someone cannot keep it any longer - at the owners request mind you. They see the end results of what happens to dumped animals - and what they can do. My fil had to shoot a dog one year that attacked his cattle. We couldn't catch it and he had already gotten a hold of a calf's leg and was stalking the rest to go for more. We had to rope the calf and doctor it for a couple of weeks after that. I honestly think it was an easier fate on that dog than being smashed on the highway as most are we find. It really is stupid of people to dump in the country. Between not knowing how to behave around livestock and not knowing how to survive in the wild, a domestic animal just has no place being dumped.

And for unwanted horses. I would rather feed a horse to a human than let the horse suffer in the pasture or see one turned loose. Or let a horse of wrong mind hurt a human. There is a market for good trained horses, but not for untrained or unworthy horses. And for seniors, well, they are not worth much anymore sadly. I also do not see horses as pets - they are livestock. That does not mean I treat my horses like dirt, but they are not pets. They are pampered and well cared for livestock.
