Abandoned babies on my step and I'm ignorant!

Happy New Year! I'm going by baby behavior too with the heat. I put a heat lamp over the pen in my office and although the thermometer only reads 78 they aren't huddling together or anything, they just wander about and then flop down and sleep! The cat on the other hand is laying on top of the pen enjoying the heat.
I don't know who my Santa was but I sure appreciate them, and now that a couple of days have passed and I've gotten such good support in here I'm breathing easier and not running in every hour at night to make sure they are still alive!
A couple have taken leadership positions, they stand on top of the feeder and hold court. One likes to sleep with it's head in the food, another hugs the water dish. Goldie sleeps under Captain Jack's paw at the edge of the pen. I'll try and get some good pics and figure out Photobucket this afternoon.

You're doing OK by observing the chick's behavior with regards to the temperature. As long as they look like they're comfortable don't worry about what the thermometer says... especially since you really don't know for sure how old they are. The first time I had chicks in the brooder I remember obsessing over the temp. The second time, I looked at the thermometer occassionally. Now I don't even bother to put it in. My chicks form a "chick wreath" around the comfortable area and I raise or lower the heat lamp accordingly. As long as they look content, don't worry. A chick will only cry if he is cold, in pain or hungry. It sounds as if you are being a wonderful chick mama!!!

Inuyashalover... I didn't mean to sound like I was complaining about the pic size!!! My eyes aren't what they used to be.
