I have a hen (born 5/2022, started laying 10/2022) that is currently on amoxicillin and a steroid cream for her vent. She has a nodule on the vent and is swollen, took her to the vet ND he said she has an abdominal infection that could be causing the nodules.

It's been a out a week of meds, she doesn't seem to be herself fully tho. Not eating like normal just doesnt seem to have her appetite and her poop is very runny. And she has stopped laying 2 days Into the meds.

Is that normal with amoxicillin??

I am supposed to give every 12 hours but I have not been diligent with that only because it seems like it's giving her an upset belly... Also the steroid cream seems to make her very sensitive. I can force all the meds on her no matter if she likes it or not.

Any words of wisdom to throw my way is appreciated

Can you post any pictures of her vent? I would complete the amoxicillin, but I would also give her a probiotic every day. Probios powder or the generic, can be found at most feed stores. You can use other probiotics for animals, or use some plain greek yogurt with live cultures each day. Does the vet feel like this is an intestinal infection or a reproductive infection? Is she eating and drinking okay?

Her vent has never really been normal, more like an outie vs an innie:)

Vet did not say if it was reproductive or not but I also didn't ask either.

The nodule seems to have reduced in size but not much

Does it filled fluid-filled, soft, or hard? I haven’t seen anything like that before.
I can't tell if it is fluid or not. It's hard and no drainage that I have seen. Once I put the steroid cream on it, it started to scab over.

Hey, just wondering what dosage did your vet prescribe for the amoxicillin?
Thank you!
