I got a book about clicker training for my daughter, and I've been reading it myself. It's apparently very important to click and reinforce swiftly so the two things are connected in the bird's mind.

My housechickens all knew the word "up", "time for bed", "get down" "grapes", their names and several other words. They also knew to stay out of the living room, and could be trusted for brief times if I was out of the house to actually stay out of there. One chicken I had actually learned the word "thirsty" when I would ask her, as she drank a lot, had a crook beak and I think she drank to make up for her hunger, poor dear. The ones I have left will come up and "love on me" by pecking my shirt or pants leg, and they dont peck if I wear shorts, so they know the dif between skin and clothes somehow.

My silly pups dont even have that concept yet and I am weary of sharp teeth, ouch!

I was very surprised at how they learned things if properly socialized. Always had the concept of dumb chickens too.

I have one that is a chicken escape artist. She is really sneaky too! She'll let me push her away from the door but then scoot around behind me and try to hide behind my leg where I can't see her. Little stinker. She's only 9 weeks old too and she's already escaped a couple of times. Now I always have one eyeball on her!

My DH keeps being surprised by Lulu, our lame runt/ part time house chicken. He always thought chickens were not too smart but she has helped him realize that they can be quite smart. If we are out in the yard with some kind of digging tool and Lulu sees us, she will follow us to see if we are going to dig so she can get worms and bugs. If we don't have a tool, she will keep about her own business. She can tell the sound of the greenhouse door slam without seeing it and comes hurrying because that is where we keep the corn. She also knows not to come in the living room on the carpet.

They are plenty smart alright. They got me to build them a nice 4 bedroom house with a large great room. They have me opening doors, doing their shopping, handling all of their medical needs, and even providing security when they are out n about. All of that for a few eggs they was looking to get rid of anyway. And I do it all with a smile. I know corporate management teams that aint that good.......
