I'm Dean. A little bit about me. I am a husband, Father and military Veteran. I was injured in Afghanistan in 2010 (a sniper shot me through the head, yes really).

I have been anonymously learning from the BYC website since the end of last year and I have only just found your phone app so I thought it was about time I actually got involved and interacted with you knowledgeable people.
I will probably just follow the BYC "template" for this introduction so I hope people find it okay.

Around 9 months ago a spur of the moment decision from the wife was to register interest to take in some rescued battery hens.
We then purchased a 2-4 chicken coop we found online and waited patiently for the invitation to collect some chickens.
We ended up taking 4 hens, apparently they were in amazing condition considering where they came from (I've since read awful stories regarding the poor condition of other rescued batches).
We have thoroughly enjoyed having them in our lives and our 3 year old daughter really loves them so we went and purchased another coop (8-10 large chickens) and 4 Welsumer's last week at the Lincolnshire Show.
We aren't going to get rid of the smaller coop, they will just have a choice of where to go once they are all fully integrated.

We have 1 cockerel and 7 hens.

4 ex-battery hens (I'm unsure of the breed) & 4 Welsumer's (1 cockerel & 3 hens).

I think they are hilarious to watch, they each have their own little personalities and it has been great to see how the 4 hens have took to their new lives.
I'm looking forward to getting to know the Welsumer's once they are fully integrated.

At the minute I am trying to branch into cybersecurity, I'm doing a lot of online learning from various sources (I've always been a computer geek ever since my Commodore 64 in the late 80's, early 90's).
I'm also really into modifying cars (I thought I would grow out of it but I still love it, much to the wife's dismay).

My wife and I have a 3 year old daughter (4 next week), we have 2 KC registered British Bulldogs, an RSPCA rescue cat, an Irish horse, a Shetland pony and the 8 chickens.
We live in a rural area with a little under 2 and a half acres of land, our chickens are free range and have the run of the land.

I found BYC through online search engines last year when I first started researching up on keeping chickens.

I'm looking forward to chatting to people on here rather than just anonymously learning, this took longer than I expected to write and now it's 00:51 and I'm off to sleep but I will chat to everyone in the morning.
I'm sure I have probably missed a lot from this so feel free to ask any questions if you have any, I will try and get some pictures for you all tomorrow.

Goodnight.

Im sorry about your injury but I think with your farm, animals, wife and tiny daughter you seem to have a great life. I also find my chickens amusing. When you had your Commodore 64 did you play “Choplifter”? I loved that game! Anyway, welcome to the forum!
