Hello everyone,
My girlfriend April and I recently bought our dream house with some land, and the makings of our farm began. She wanted a Peacock, which we will be getting this Summer, In our quest to find a peacock we met a woman locally who raises them. We checked out her coop and it was also built for chickens. Then we were at the local feed store, and April and I saw a bunch of chicks. We thought it would be fun to get some for our 3 boys. I was just wrapping my head around the whole peacock idea, and now we are on to chickens. However, I love to garden, so the idea of having animals that produce one of the best fertilizers for free was not a hard sell. Plus we both love to cook, and what better to cook with than fresh eggs.
We found this site in our travels for coop ideas. I have been on here several times since then, and figured I would join. I have my plans for how I am going to build my coop and hope to start soon. This past Saturday we went to another feed store where locals sell their farm animals, and we met a wonderful lady who hatches regularly. April and I agreed that we would head out to her place, when we are read to purchase our chicks, instead of buying them in a store that has them shipped in from commercial hatcheries. We like to support local businesses. We have never had chickens before, and are thankful there is a site like this, where people share their wisdom and passion for us to learn from. We have already learned a great deal and look forward to the resources provided here.
Thanks for all the help. Let the chicken adventure begin!
