She's a first time Momma BO, her chick is a welsummer & I was just lucky enough to get 2 two day old cochin babies. It been dark for a couple of hours, whats the best way to slip the babies under Momma & have her think they are hers?
Keep a close eye on them. I just lost 2 serama chicks that I snuck under a hen that had some other seramas that had hatched 2 days earlier. She accepted them for 2 days and then she killed them.. so be very careful..
is she in a confined space, if so slip them in in the dark, what she needs is to hear them to recognize them as her's, if not in a confined space you are going to have to watch her closer,
thanks for all of the replies, yes she is in a "nursery" a large dog crate with a milk crate as her nest. She has two remaining eggs that did not hatch and her two day old baby. She spends all day in her nest with the baby under her or right in front of her.
I'm planning on taking the eggs out & slipping the new babies & the broken shell from the first baby under her. Because of the setup I can't get to her from the back.
I really
I think Cochins are great momma's because I just stuck 7 chicks under one of my broodies (she hatched two of her own) and she took them on...no problems.
The other hen that was sitting on eggs (only hatched one)...helps out with mothering duties! It sure is a sweet sight to see!!
