Abscess?

I found this on one of my roosters, just behind the oil gland. It is hot to touch but that may just be his normal body heat, and it is firm but not hard. My guess is it's an abscess but I'm not sure. Does anyone have an idea of what it is or how to treat it?
He has mites but I think this is unrelated and I did treat for them.

He obviously has mites which you can see in the picture. What are you treating those with? You might try doing a very warm wet compress for 15 minutes to the swollen area a couple of times a day, and clean it with some Hibiclens and water or Betadine. Hard to know if this is an abscess, irritation from the mites, or possibly a tumor. Sometimes the oil gland becomes abscessed and that can respond to the warm compress and some massaging. Permethrin garden dust applied with a sock every 7 days can treat the mites on him, but you also need to treat the coop after emptying all bedding, as well as the other birds. Martins or Gordons Permethrin 10 concentrate can be mixed with water 1 tsp per quart and used in a spray bottle or garden sprayer for the coop. Here is where to find that:

I was wondering if it is an abscess, if I should leave it alone or try lancing it. I have treated for his mites. We don't have a reliable poultry vet in the area so that's not an option.

You could disinfect the skin and try to lance it with a disposable scalpel from the feed store, and see if anything can be squeezed out. Sometimes an abscess will break opening on it’s own. How do you feel about using an antibiotic's, since he is not a laying hen? You might be able to get some amoxicillin online.
