I always keep mine on paper towels then add pine or wood shavings (not the fine) under the towels for a few days ..then take the paper towels away...using the larger shavings they can't peck and eat ....

Also found using puppy pads for the first few days works well too...they can get good traction...

Ok done, took out the cedar and put in some hay

we're still trying to save the little Crevecoeur, sometimes it seems ok and then other times it cant even stand up and ends up falling face first into the bedding. we've been giving it some cooked oatmeal through a syring since it wont eat the feed. we're going to try and give it some sugar water with a syringe now. my gf is gonna be distraught if it dies, that is her favorite chick

the cedar oil messes up there nostrils and causes problems. Careful with hay as well. if it gets wet and damp it can cause problems. Plus hay can harbor unwanted bugs like mites

Yep, cedar is bad because the phenols in the oils found in the wood disrupt the mucus lining the respiratory system and allows for infections to set in easily.

Ok. the chick was cheeping to the others and eating and drinking (all good signs). Can stumble around a bit. Hope it does ok!!!

There is a vast difference in the smell of cedar shavings and pine. I don't understand how you couldnt smell it.

They probably did smell it Kristen, just smelled fresh and clean, just probably didn't know it was harmful to their chicks. It is sold as bedding for small animals so that can be alittle confusing and misleading too I suppose.

I hope all the babies recover and maybe just every so often we should start a thread for the newer folks and remind them of some of these harmful things that aren't so obvious..like Buff's Treat list, a checklist of do's and don't with new chickens..good project there for Pat or some other super organized research minded person, loL!!
