(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
We had chickens when I was a kid. We didn't plan to have chickens at all but came home from vacation in January to discover we'd been adopted by the RIR pictured in my profile pic. When she started paying rent (pretty much daily) we decided we were in it for the long haul!

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
We have 5.

(3) What breeds do you have?
Adult RIR hen "Henny Penny Penelope Pie" of unknown age and 4 chicks hatched the beginning of March- Plymouth Barred Rock "Broulee", Golden Comet (sold as Buff Orpington) "Custard", Easter Egger (sold as Ameraucana and possibly a roo) "Souffle", and Silver Laced Wyandotte "Frittata aka Fritta Bobitta or Baby Fritta".

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
They are adorable, give us eggs (just the adult for now), and a joy to watch.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Camping, fishing, hiking, beadwork.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
Married to a wonderful guy with hair as bright red as my Golden Comet with two kids (boy-10 and girl-9) at home and 3 grown sons. We have a 7-yr old lab/mastiff who is the sweetest gentle giant ever (and very cautious around chickens after Penny told her off!), a wily cat (who is now scared of chickens!), an Abyssinian guinea pig, and innumerable fish including a Plecostomus, a blind black Moor goldfish, and two albino rainbow sharks.

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community? :D

I found BYC while Googling info on chicken care. I joined so I could ask questions and get advice from chicken mamas and papas with more knowledge and experience.

WELCOME! Plecostomus, a very homely fish, but great at his cleaning duties. :).
Yes! And the sharks are pretty good at keeping the "house" tidy as well. They are said to be aggressive when tanked together but ours have enough room and hidey holes that they get along fine.
