Accidental injection of fluid into lungs

When giving fluids to any animal subcutaneously, you must "tent" the skin. It's pinching and lifting the skin so that you are only inserting into skin layers and nothing underneath. I'm sorry no one instructed you correctly:(
if you hear gurgling, then fluid is most likely in the lung. Pulmonary edema is not related to this. The lungs are sterile, and hopefully the LR you injected is also. It's better if you don't insert anything else into the lungs(introducing germs).
She will either clear this herself, or pneumonia will settle in... Not much else u can do.

You can give birds subq fluids in other spots (such as skin behind neck- remember to tent skin and get the needle into subdermal space- not into other tissue) which pose less risk. I have seen subq fluids given to avian exotics, I haven't had personal experience with chickens and subq fluids other than subq mareks vaccinations.

If the fluid you injected was kept sterile she will probably be able to absorb it without pneumonia setting in. You might want to give her some antibiotics just in case your method was not done in an aseptic manner.

Good news! It appears her body pretty rapidly absorbed the liquid!
From reading, I think it's mainly if extra liquid in the lungs due to the body's own poor functioning that it stays there and becomes a problem.

I poured hydrogen peroxide to clean the places where I inserted the needle. I don't dare give antibiotics because most could cause serious problems with her fungal condition.

I understand tenting. It is hard to do most places on a chicken!!

The skin where I put in the needle (the back edge of her wing) naturally tented as I lifted the wing.

I'm thinking the problem was I must have put in too much liquid for this small, thin hen and the pressure caused the membranes on her lungs to let some through. Gratefully, the body removed it after pressure went down. It seems body will restore the balance within a few hours or less, unless the body has a functional problem or a whole lot of fluid got in and causes immediate crisis.

I feel bad for poking my hen so much trying to fix the problem. Poor sweetheart...

She's the one shown in my avatar. Please pray for her if you would. She's been feeling so weak, with little interest in food. I don't know when it's her time to go.

Thanks, everyone, for your caring and exploring thoughts.

Don't feel bad about the injection. You were trying your best to simply help her! You're obviously a great chicken mom and really care for her... so no guilt, and don't give up!

I, too, have a gurgling bantam, from eye dropping Arnica, to try and solve Merck's disease, into her lungs by accident. It was mixed w alcohol. Not sure I have that correct spelling on the disease. I heard its untreatable but a friend said his homeopathic vet gave one of his hens Arica drops and it solved the problem. Thought I'd try since I've already lost 3 others from the same thing (same brood, prob not inoculated when hatched, I'm guessing.) now she's got two problems! Breathing hard, but hanging in there. Have her inside with cold weather. One leg paralyzed. Help! Any ideas?

I used the "Advanced Search" feature at the top of the page & entered the keywords "treat mareks successfully" & selected the "Emergencies..." forum to look up some answers for you. You can find them at https://www.backyardchickens.com/ne...re=gt&numupdates=&newer=1&type=all&advanced=1

If you want to give any medicine or food by mouth, there are instructions on how to do this without getting it into a birds lungs on the Baytril for Birds page on the website linked in my sig below.

If you want to give an injection, there are instructions for doing that on the Poultry Podiatry page on my PoultryPedia.com website.

You can also start a new thread yourself in the "Emergencies..." forum to request specific advice for your hen. Read the "Stickies" instructions first if you want to get the most helpful answers from people.

Welcome to BYC! You will find there are lots of ways to find help around here. Best wishes to you with your little hen!
