Accidental Pet Chicken: What now??

Personally I'd put the roo in "freezer camp"(I like that term

). You could try keeping the hen away from the others til she if fully recovered (afore mentioned 2nd hand dog crate) and when you reintroduce her, do it after they are on roost. At which point I'd take the new lead hen and crate her for a few days to a week. Re intorducing her may drop her down the pecking order.

I agree dispatch the nasty rooster. Freeze him for couple days before consuming him freezing kills any parasites. If you wish to go one step further after thawing bird place him in brine solution for 24 hours then rinse well. Rooster makes excellent soup stock or stews. I have never roasted a rooster, but can’t be bad in taste.

If Rooster Spurs one of your children in the face I’m sure you wish you had taken care of him sooner.

I'm in the "the rooster needs to go" camp. Your hens will go back in the coop at night with or without him. It's not right that your kids can't go outside without fear of being attacked.

I lived close enough I would come do the processing for you for free just so your children can be safe. We have had our share of Nasty Roosters Gone Crazy, one rooster made the foolish mistake of going after my 3 year old son. We only keep nice roosters for flock protection. If we cannot physically handle the rooster as a pet; rooster shows any aggressive behavior it goes into the freezer without any hesitation.
