So for the first time ever, my broody didn't hatch a single egg. She was sitting on 13 eggs and today is day 24 with no signs of hatching. Her nesting box is full of filth and I decided to try to clean it a bit.
Well i accidentally cracked a shell and low and behold there was a live chick inside. The hen began to peck at it so I removed the chick (still inside the virtually shattered egg) and placed it in an incubator. The chick has since crawled out of the shell but appears to be too early. It hasnt opened its eyes and there is a long piece of connective tissue from its back to the shell. It is chirping strongly, breathing well, and attempting to move.
We have hatched many eggs but never under these circumstances. Does the little thing have a chance?

Just keep it in the incubator and the humidity as if he was still incubating. Keep it like that for a couple of days and hope for the best. It still has it's egg yolk so don't worry about feeding it bugs or anything else right now. I hope he makes it! Please let me know if he makes it!

Pictures? Has it absorbed the yolk sack?
The yolk sack is dry (some remnants in shell). You can guess from the filth of the other eggs what the box looked like and why i tried to clean it.
Broodies in the past never pooped on their eggs and made such a mess in the box. This was a 1 yr old hen and her first time going broody. Does her lack of experience play a roll?

Eggs get pretty gross throughout the brood

YUK!
Had you checked that she was getting off the nest during incubation?
I'd not let her hatch again.

Not usually.

I have had a problem with broody hens quitting around the 8-10day mark. So I came up with a plan of locking them in the 3ft x 5ft brooder (preferred) or by removing the divider of two nesting boxes and closing her in (1ft by 3 ft).

In the past, the hen would move off the eggs to feed, get water, do her business and return. When i checked on this hen she appeared to be doing the same.....at first. Then 3 days before the hatch date she started messing over the eggs. Feed and water continued to be consumed but the eggs became even more filthy. Given the way they looked and the fact that they were several days past hatching day, i assumed they weren't viable and she somehow knew it which is why she stopped moving.
But i was wrong. At least for this one egg.

Was she in the 3x5 enclosure?
Was feed and water away from nest so she had to get up to eat and drink.....and poop?

Not

This time. She went broody unexpectedly and the 3x5s were buried in my garage with 29 other orojects in front if them.
Ive had success in the nesting box combo before so just did that. Food and water was kept on the far side so she had to move to get to them.
For 18 days everything was going fine and looking normal. Then, "Yuck!"
