Accidently killed my favorite pet chicken today...

Its so true, which is why BYCers are the best folks! The world could use a few more compassionate pragmatists...

Why? I butchered a batch last summer and put one on the table that night and it was fine.

Sorry about your accident. My son did that to a young rabbit we were raising when he closed the door to the hutch. He was 9 and totally freaked out. We burried Caramel under the crabapple tree with our old dog and had a little service for him.

As for letting the carcass rest or not, it depends on how old it is. I don't remember reading if it was said how old it was but... more than 8-12 weeks and I'd let it sit. Unless you're cooking it nice and slow, which would't be ready for tonight anyway.

She was about 14 months, she laid large monstrous slightly deformed eggs. I was thinking of making dumplings...

I am sorry for your loss. Now she can repay your nurturing by providing for your family <3

At 14 months old I'd let her sit for at least 3 days in the fridge before cooking. You should also consider cooking her slowly or else it may be tough.

Don't take this the wrong way, but I don't think I could eat my favorite pet chicken. I know alot of people think differently but being raised as a city girl I'd have a hard time of it.
I just had Hubby bring some excess roosters down to a very good neighbor and friend of ours to butcher and keep.
I would like to be able to eat some of my own birds but I'm not quite their yet.

Someday !! I hope, I just wish I could put in an order for my hens to lay only eggs that would hatch out little pullets !!! But until then...........Poor Roosters, I still have a ton of extra Ameruacanas but I think they are so cute hanging out in a gang that I've decided to keep (for now anyway) them for pets !!

I know, I'm a lost cause !!!

Yup, another Iowa corn-fed woman with a heavy foot. Stepped on a youngun while stirring the bedding. Made me durned Mad! Ya can't even eat em when they are that small. Just an awful feeling and a big waste!

So sorry for your loss. I find it fitting that nugget sustain your body as she did you spirit. There are some cultures that thank the food they eat for giving thier life to nourish them. One culture I read about does not even speak while they are eating in honor of the sacrifice. Seems very respectful to honor her life that way.

Today is the third day. I think I will make dumplins. I think it will be easier if it doesn't look like a chicken. My little girl is having the worst time thinking about it, but I did get these so they know where their food comes from.

The four chickens I have left, Kiev, Marsala, Cacciatore, and Piccata, don't seem to miss her, Nugget was low man on the totem pole and the friendliest with humans. Piccata is the only chicken I have that won't let us hand feed her or pick her up. We got her at 2 weeks instead of 2 days - wish it was that one that got her head stuck in the gate guillotine.
