I have a hen who had an impacted crop, now appears to be sour crop. This is the 6th day of the issue.

I have acidified copper sulfate arriving tomorrow. It seems to be a lesser known treatment. Before I use this (am nervous about it), if you have used this as a sour crop treatment that isn't resolving with miconazole, how was your experience? How much/how often did you dose it?

I do not have experience using Copper Sulfate myself, but this is what the Chicken Health Handbook by Gail Damerow says:

Here is a good post by @azygous on using it (similar, to the above advice but much more detailed)!

Thank you. It scares me some but afraid not to try and then lose her. Anyone know if I should stop miconazole when starting the copper?

I'm curious as well. We brought in our chicken with sour crop last Wed evening. Started miconazole abd fasted her that night and the next day. Friday morning her crop had shrunk considerably, so we have continued treatment and only fed her scrambled egg, watered down plain greek yogurt with fresh garlic, and moistened chicken feed, however, her crop is still not emptying completely overnight. She's gotten very thin (she's also about 6 yrs old). Her energy/strength have gotten a bit better but she's still lethargic and hasn't made a sound sibce we brought her in. I just started her on a probiotic/electrolyte mix in addition to her water with a little ACV. And I just gave her a little coconut oil too, though I don't think her crop feeps impacted. We have copper sulfate but I'm also scared to try it with the miconazole. Did you find and answer? How's your chicken doing?

We use copper sulfate to treat foot rot in cattle, it is nasty stuff for them to walk in but it does the job, not sure I’d pour it inside a chicken! Copper toxicity is a real thing, in mammals (sheep!) all the red blood cells pop, nasty way to die. I’m thinking this treatment might be worse than the disease, ugh!

This is a reply from one of our crop experts to a new member about the use of it. It should help.

Mine ended up with a playdough like crop and I worked it for almost two weeks but it only grew and she had to have surgery. :( I tried the copper sulfate as a last dutch effort before then but also read it can make sick hens sicker. I only gave it to her for one night and then stopped because she went to the vet. I'm sorry I can't be of more help.
