I picked up a Golden Wyandotte Saturday to bring me back up to 6 chicks I have 5 RIR's. I was worried because even though they were about the same age "Goldie" (easy to come up with a name for the new black chick) seemed much smaller. The guy told me just hold them all together and put them back into the pen, baby chicks aren't that bright. So I had my husband hold one and I held one with the new baby and I switched chicks then put them all back in the pen. Well baby chicks aren't that stupid either! They all stood together and had a face off with poor little Goldie. They surrounded her, then ran away from her. I got worried but within a few minutes she was part of the flock!

It amazes me how much baby chicks are like small children on a playground. They confront a new one who suddenly appears among them, one will haul off and slug the child on the arm, or a chick will peck the newcomer solidly on the forehead, and then they're off to play like they've all been best buddies forever.

They are so cute! I really felt better when I caught her sleeping right along side of one chick like they are buddies.
