adding a egg to a new nest

I read a thread saying that when you have new hens put an egg or golf ball in the new nest and
that tells them where to lay. if your hens lay brown eggs does it matter if I put a white egg
in there or does it have to be brown? golf balls are white also.

No it does not matter. Anything that looks like an egg will do. I put white golfballs in my nest boxes when my hens, who lay brown and green eggs, began to lay. I have never had an egg not layed in the nest.

If you want you can buy fake eggs that look exactly like real eggs and come in brown, but that is not necessary.

Well they started laying a few today with out the fake egg.
