Adding Chickens to our Homestead!

I have always dreamed of owning our own plot of land that we could develop into just what we wanted. A homestead of our own and finally we have just that. We own a lovely 10 acre plot on the Pigeon River in West Michigan where along with our home we have an organic garden, an orchard, chickens, a vineyard and my art studio all surrounded by nature, boundless wildlife and the river.

Chickens are our most recent addition. After researching and pondering for several years now we finally took the plunge last week to put our flock of egg layers together. I just joined the BYC today after coming here often to learn. We are starting off with 5 chickens: 1 golden laced Wyonette, 1 Barred Rock, 1 Ameraucana, 1 Light Brahma and 1 Bantam Black Breasted Red Old English Game Bantam (I believe, sex to be determined).

Welcome & Congratulations!

I recommend a visit to the Learning Centre; lots of good tips there: https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center

You might want to also pop in and say hello on your local thread: https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/26/where-am-i-where-are-you ‘Find your State’s thread.

This is a link to the Breed & Gender Forum Diva mentioned: https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/15/what-breed-or-gender-is-this

I hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

If you would like to share pictures and stories of your flock, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out
