Looks like all is well so far. Mama cochin brought her kiddos out to scratch in the run while the new chick stayed behind in the nest though. It started peeping, so I put it with my Game hen. I tried not to let her see the new chick, but she did. Puffed up and lifted her wing so I could put it under her. Then puffed and rearranged herself on to all 4.
Hopefully the chicks can figure this out, because mama seems to have taken them in. The lamp is available too in case they can't figure out to follow a hen. Fingers crossed....
These two are easily my sweetest and favorite hens. That's why when they went broody together I let them. I figured they should hopefully make good mommas. They seem to be proving me right so far.
Now the chicks need to figure the mommy thing out.
Well, my game hen rejected them after her lunch, got them out of the nest for food, then she wouldn't let them back in the nest.... She's in a dog crate to break the brooding. The cochin may our may not let them hang out with her though. They've been following her chicks, and she's been letting them so far.
Well, my cochin seems to be tolerating them well. They've been following her and her chicks around, and right now she's sitting on everyone to keep them warm. Fingers crossed.
Unfortunately she got sick of being mama to the new chicks after 2-3 hours and started chasing them off. Divided the brooding coop so the chicks have the heatlamp area. Too bad they weren't younger.
