I've found that the feeders that are raised up to about chest level have less food on the ground around them than the feeders that are on the ground. I think it is because they can't scratch it or push it out with their beaks. I had a couple on the ground for the younger/shorter birds but I think I need to put something under all of them. Another bonus to raising them is that they don't get shavings or straw kicked into them.
