Adding new birds?

Thanks for the advice... my only concern is that i have a rooster, he is only about 6 months old, my new chicks seem to have two young rooster 7weeks old,, is it ok to put them together ..i have had them seprrated for about 3 weeks , where they can see each other,, any advice

Yeah I agree. And from the experts on here

they say to keep them separate for 4 weeks. I would try to get as close to that time as possible. I plan on using my plastic brooder as my quarantine pen as long as I can-until they get too big

So how far away does the new pullet need to be from the current ones? A foot, two, three?

I guess I don't truly understand why the insistence on quarantining. Unless the new bird is deathly ill (which seems like it would be noticeable) how would she get the others equally sick? Do all chickens have some kind of crazy individual gene specific disease that can only be cured by 4 weeks of isolation?

Because a perfectly healthy looking bird can have a disease that has dormant symptoms and can infect your whole flock and potentially kill them. They can be what is referred to as carriers. Most say to keep them 50 ft away and down wind. I am planning on quarantining my new ones I am getting on Wednesday in my garage. They will be there for at least 3 weeks, hopefully 4, before I place them with the rest.

Newbie 32--- look in the "Learning Center" on BYC for instructions on adding new birds. Also, read up on all the diseases that hens/chicks can get or transmit. Even people can carry disease to your flock and some diseases a hen/chick can pass on to humans. I found the info in the Learning Center invaluable. There are articles about quarantining and why. All the info I have learned here has kept my flock happy and healthy. Good luck.

Well the boss RIR hen is finally settling down and letting the Rocks out more. I have gotten two eggs from the new Rock hens, we have had them 11 days now I think. The people that we bought our chickens from said it might be 2 weeks before they started laying. So far they have been pretty sure with them. We have gotten all our chickens from the same couple. Having not been getting a lot of eggs, but the weather has been very hot for the last couple of weeks and is suppose to cool down this week sometime. I hope that is the reason.

I never said they don't. My reply states that quarantining is a GOOD thing. I stated that they can transmit- so I am not sure what your comment is arguing with

So far my bigger hens could care less about the smaller one's....It could be that even tho they are in the same run they are still separated....I'm hoping the bigger hens could just care less

Hello everyone. New member here, and new to this crazy hobby, but in love with it. I spent months researching this site prior to getting started, and someday hope to be able to share pics of my chicks and coop. For now though, I have an introdcution of chicks question:

In two weeks I will be getting three 4-week old Australorps, and will need to introduce them to my five 7-week old chicks (3 orps and 2 Red Stars (they will be 7-weeks old at the time)).
I've been reading all I can about introducing new chicks, but I haven't seen any scenarios where the chicks are so young and so close in age.
What kind of problems can I expect to see? Was hoping to just be able to put them in the coop/run together, but I guess I need to quarantine for awhile first. It will be mid- to high-40's here at night by then, and my current chicks are just now starting to go into the coop at night on their own with the aid of a nightlight and a little heat lamp.
Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Hi I have 4 hens 16 wks old to integrate, yet they have been in the same 40 X 40 fenced in back yard with the 1 1/2 year old hens the whole time. Can I just put them in the same coop now? I am new and to tell you the truth I don't even know how to work my e-mail yet.
