Adding new chicks to already existing chicks

The only people that I know that are into the chickens are outside city limits so the rules don't apply.... I'm still trying to figure out if I'm within city limits or not. It's hard to tell. I know that sounds weird, but in some things it makes sense that we're inside city limits and in other things we're outside. I don't know. And we are kinda out in the country, so I'm not sure why there's a 4 bird limit.

Usually there is a website for your City-- look under city ordinances andd your local Zoning map-- they are very specific-- We are for example just out side of city limits and zoned R-2 residential agricultural what ever that is is-- it does mean I can keep plenty of birds and I think (if I remember correctlY) 1 large hoofed creature per acre....

I am residential agricultural too...do not know about R 2. Perhaps I am R1 because I don't believe there is a limit to the large hoofed creature but I was told I can't have a commercial dairy operation. lol

I have a 1/3 of an acre and neighbors on every side. That is why it seemed funny to me about no Tyson farm or dairy operation. There are of course people in this zone that have many acres, so I guess this too could be too restrictive for some.

Call the county headquarters. They will point you to the correct information.

I was totally quoting off the top of my head, my main interest at the time was chickens (we can have up to 100 birds an acre, something waaay more than we are planning)-- not really sure about the hoofed creature-- cause we are actually looking to getting a "mini moo" a 200 lb Dexter heifer in October but she would have to have a calf to come into milk... So we would be over our 1 hoofed creature limit I think (we have 1.9 acres....).... I will double check.....

the new chickens should be fine, just buy atleast 5 or more so they can group up. chickens DO have a pecking order, ive done this sevaral times.

I've been watching the GBJ's the last couple of days and they're crazy! They've been running all over, and one has been jumping on the others and pecking at them. That one is the most daring of the 3. (Do hens show aggression?? Really hoping we get don't have roos, but.....) Anyway, I guess we'll see how big the other chicks are when we go pick them up.

So we picked up 6 new chicks today! 2 days old! Soooo cute, but soooooooo small! Th GBJ's will run them over!! So I think I'm going to keep them separate until the new ones can defend themselves! Oreo (in the picture) has determined that she's the lead hen and she's quite ornery about it!

Yes arent they tiny? Ours are on day 3 and still so teeny but active and chirpy-- theres another thread around a 4 week old getting badly pecked so I too will be careful about keeping these little one seperate from the Biggies... AM a nervous wreck have to work this weekend and then have a workshop I have to be at Mon eve! So will be gone for THREE days! Leavign my precious little ones with my other precious little one (9year old daughter)-- we have a plan in place and my daughter loves the chicks-- she is Dad's reminder! So will have to see-- they got too hot last night (checked them at 3am and they were on the sides of the dog crate away from the lamp on top of the crate-- it was 104 yesterday and didnt cool off til after 10pm-- so I am going with a blanket over half the crate and feather duster for the weekend...Figured it was less harmful than risking them sizzling at night in the crate while I am gone-- my family sleeps like rocks -- they will be on their own 9pm-8AM...
CONGRATS BTW!

Well, now, I'm worried about the yellow Americauna picking on the others. I get the pecking order thing, but this one is going after eyes! I don't want her blinding the others! She's being a bit of a brute! I'm not sure what to do!

Risa, in case you are still thinking of marans, Frizelle Enos feedstore in penngrove has a whole bunch of tiny marans chicks...

best,
laura
