Adding on to my run?

Hahah, well it is an extra cost, for sure. But I would definitely set up a split run again if I needed to make a new set up in the future. It's just too handy even if you don't use it all the time. Like just dealing with a broody-(that doesn't want to break), if I see her eyeing the coop I just shut the gate on her so she can't even get to it while I clean out her jail cell.

It sounds so convenient.

And it begins!

So chicken math has struck me.

I started with 5. Now I have 12.

So I want to enlarge my run. I'm thinking of making a second run and then connecting them with a chicken tunnel.

Or would it be better to just make the existing run bigger?

My chickens age between 6 weeks and 15 weeks. No one is laying yet. The coop is plenty big to hold everyone I just want more room in the run for them

Thanks for the advice

Edit to add: My girls and gentlemen get a few hours out to free range but I want them to have plenty of room for them when they are "cooped" up, pun intended

I have used a covered “overpass” to connect the runs. I just inherited 3 chickens from a friend (possibly ex-friend now! 🧐) and have them in the attached area. I have a door I use to close off the runs from each other.

Lots of ways to skin a cat as the saying goes. I will be adding on to mine early next year. One thing that I’ve done is build an isolation corner for sick or injured hens and for new chicks when I get them. It is totally predator proof with welded wire on top and side. It also has hardware fabric from the ground up about 2’ so the coins can’t reach in and grab anyone. It’s a nice feature to have as part of the operation.

I bet they would love to be in the woods finding tons of bugs! Do you not let them run free because of the predators?
They only run free when I'm home and outside with them. I have hawks, owls, raccoons, foxes and coyotes. So I am trying to make their during the day house comfy for them. Once I'm home and out and about they go out. Between me and the LGD we can keep them safe.
